Bitting Basics to Advanced Understanding — Build Comfort, Clarity & Connection

The bit is one of the most misunderstood pieces of equipment in the horse world—but it doesn’t have to be. This course will help you finally understand how different bits work, why they feel the way they do in your horse’s mouth, and what your horse is trying to tell you through their response to the bit.

Every mouth is different. Tongue thickness, palate height, bar sensitivity, breed influence (especially in QH, drafts, and baroque breeds), and even emotional tension all play a role. When you understand how your bit interacts with your horse’s unique mouth, you can prevent discomfort, avoid evasion, and create a clearer, softer conversation.

This isn’t about buying more bits.

It’s about learning what you already have, choosing tools intentionally, and creating a partnership built on comfort and communication—not confusion or force.

Once you understand how cheekpieces, leverage, mouthpieces, curb straps, and ratios all work together, you’ll never look at a bit the same way again.

What You’ll Learn

By the end of this short course, you’ll be able to:

Understand Your Horse’s Mouth

  • Recognize tongue thickness, palate height, mouth shape, and how these determine proper bit size & thickness.
  • Understand which breeds commonly need more room and why (QH, drafts, baroque types).
  • Identify signs of discomfort, pinching, pressure points, and improper bit fit.

Decode Cheekpieces & Mechanics

  • Understand O-rings, D-rings, eggbutts, full cheeks, half cheeks, baucher snaffles, and when each is appropriate.
  • Learn how shank bits work: purchase length, shank length, ratios, leverage, balance, and curb strap function.
  • Recognize how shank shape (straight, S-curve, swept-back) changes signal, timing, and bit balance.

Master Mouthpiece Function

  • Compare round, square, and flat (Rutledge/roper-style) mouthpieces—and how each distributes pressure.
  • Learn the true mechanics of single joints, double joints, Billy Allen barrels, rollers, dogbones, and ports.
  • Understand twisted wires (slow, medium, fast twist): how fewer points of contact = more intensity.

Identify & Solve Bit Evasion

  • Rooting, bracing, head tilting, gaping, tongue over the bit, curling, and rushing--
  • learn what each form of evasion really means.
  • Understand whether the problem is the bit, the fit, your hands, your horse’s understanding… or all three.
  • Learn how to evaluate comfort vs confusion so you can respond fairly and kindly.

See the Whole Picture

  • Connect the mechanics of the bit with your horse’s behavior and body language under saddle.
  • Learn how rein movement, leverage, and timing feel differently to the horse.
  • Develop a softer, more consistent feel—so your horse trusts your communication.

How You’ll Practice

This course is designed to give you hands-on, real-world understanding through:

  • Photo and video analysis to see how bits sit, rotate, and engage inside the mouth.
  • Bit comparison drills to help you visually evaluate cheekpieces, thickness, and mechanics.
  • Scenario-based exercises where you interpret bitting problems and match them with solutions.
  • Optional virtual lessons (add-on) to apply concepts directly to your own horse and equipment.

You’ll learn not just what a bit does—but how it feels to your horse, and how to make better choices with confidence.

Why It Matters

A well-fitting, well-understood bit creates comfort, clarity, and true partnership.

You’ll be able to:

  • Prevent discomfort before it turns into evasion or resistance.
  • Choose bits based on the horse’s anatomy—not trends or guesses.
  • Improve responsiveness without increasing pressure.
  • Help your horse feel safe, understood, and heard.

When communication through the bit becomes soft, fair, and clear, everything else improves—your transitions, your stops, your steering, and most importantly, your horse’s trust.
